Do faster players pull more hamstrings? Yes, and this tells you how much for any current NFL player.
Select a Player and Team to get his chance of at least one hamstring injury over a full season (about 1,000 snaps), based on his combine 40-yard dash. You can also select a Team, a Position, or a Position plus Speed Quartile to see that group’s average.
How it works: Built from every NFL injury report since 2016, joined to snap counts and combine 40 times (7,000+ player-seasons). After adjusting for snaps played and position, every 0.1 seconds faster in the 40 means about 10% more hamstring injuries per snap. The strongest effects are at RB, CB, and WR.
A “hamstring injury” means appearing on the injury report with a hamstring designation. Many don’t cost a game. The number reflects what his speed predicts, not his personal history.
Covers WR, RB, TE, CB, S, LB, and EDGE players with a recorded combine 40. Undrafted players and combine skips aren’t included. Updated weekly.
